Finally, there’s a reason not to spend your life savings on your wedding.
According to new research by Economics Professors Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M. Mialon, the less expensive your wedding, the more your marriage is more likely to last. Specifically, if your wedding costs less than $1,000, you are less likely to get divorced than those who spend more. And, if your wedding costs more than $20,000, your marriage is more likely to end in divorce.
Additionally, the duo found that men who spent between $2,000 and $4,000 on an engagement ring had a higher rate of divorce than men who spent between $500 and $2,000. However, grooms who spent less than $500 on an engagement ring also had increased divorce rates.
The research has been said to prove that you don’t need to a lavish or extravagant wedding, as the wedding industry suggests.
However, there is one thing that you shouldn’t cut from your wedding: your honeymoon. Couples who went on a honeymoon were less likely to divorce than couples who did not.
Francis-Tan is a visiting associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, while Mialon is an associate professor and director of undergraduate studies in the department of economics at Emory University. They researched the association between wedding spending and marriage duration using data from a survey conducted with more than 3,000 married adults in the United States.
