While no two engagements are the same, there are certain trends that are noticeable year after year. According to weddingwire.com, which releases a Newlywed Report each year, newly engaged couples are quick to pick a date: Saturdays in fall are the most popular.

The Proposal
About 40 percent of all engagements happen between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day. Christmas Day is the most popular day of the year for a proposal with 16 percent of engagements occurring during the month of December. The next most popular months are May and July, which are tied at 9 percent.
The Ring
About 52 percent of women are surprised by the ring their partner chooses. However, about 33 percent show their partner pictures of rings and styles they like prior to the proposal. (In fact, about 75 percent of Millennials start planning other aspects of their wedding prior to the proposal!)
In regards to the ring itself:
- The average cost of an engagement ring is $5,000.
- Seventy-four percent of rings include a diamond.
- The most popular setting (53 percent) is the halo setting.
- Fifty percent of diamonds are one to two carats.
The Announcement
Eighty-six percent of couples announce their engagement on social media.
Seventy-six percent post on Facebook, while 35 percent announce on Instagram and 12 percent choose Twitter.
The Date
The most popular season for weddings is fall. Forty percent of weddings take place during these months.
