It’s no lie that weddings are expensive. And, unfortunately, that cost has increased. We recently reported that the average cost of a wedding increased over the last few years, and that cost is expected to rise. Now, a new study from our friends at The Knot indicates that the cost per wedding guest has increased, as well. The average is now $268 per guest, which is up $23 per guest from last year and $74 per guest since 2009. This may be why the average number of guests has decreased to 136 (down 5 from last year).
The latest numbers are in from The Knot Real Weddings Study 2017. For the last 11 years, The Knot surveyed nearly 13,000 engaged and married couples to learn about their weddings.
Other highlights from the survey include:
- Average wedding cost: $35,329 (This is a increase of $2,688 from 2015’s cost of $32,641 and $4,116 from 2014’s cost of $31,213.)
- Average cost of a wedding in Columbus, Ohio: $27,059
- Most expensive place to marry in the United States: New York City ($76,944)
- Least expensive place to marry in the United States: New Mexico ($17,584)
- Average age of the bride: 29
- Average age of the groom: 31
- Average number of bridesmaids and groomsmen: 5
- Most popular wedding month: December (16 percent of couples)
- Average length of an engagement: 14 months
- Most popular wedding colors: Ivory/champagne (37 percent), dark blue (32 percent) and gold (30 percent)
