However, in China, the traditional wedding dress color is red and in Ireland, it\u2019s blue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: karla;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first known white dress belonged to Philippa of England, who married Eric of Pomerania in 1406, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brides.com\/why-do-brides-wear-white-5089197\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brides.com article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Prior to Phillipa, most brides dressed as luxuriously as possible with plenty of red, gold and even black to show off their wealth (because they could afford richly hued, dyed fabrics)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt; font-family: karla;\">Queen Victoria, however, is mostly credited with starting the tradition as she wore a white lace dress when she married Prince Albert in 1840. Her choice was meant to show that while Victoria was the queen of the British empire, she demurred to her husband, even if he was of lesser status. This was also a highly publicized wedding, and brides in England and eventually the United States all wanted to dress like the famous queen, whose daughters and daughter-in-law also wore white dresses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt; font-family: karla;\">But do you have to wear white on your wedding day? No!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt; font-family: karla;\">Despite what your grandmother may have told you, the tradition, as we\u2019ve outlined above, has nothing to do with purity or virginity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt; font-family: karla;\">In the modern era, brides have chosen to wear shades of off-white, ivory and blush as nods to the tradition, but many brides choose to forego white altogether!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: karla;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kat Von D\u00a0wore a bright red dress when she married husband Leafar Seyer in 2018, Dita Von Teese wore a purple wedding gown to marry Marilyn Manson in 2006 and even Elizabeth Taylor wore canary yellow number when she wed Richard Bronson (the first time) in 1964.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: karla;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even David\u2019s Bridal, the go-to wedding dress chain, carries colored wedding dresses! <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check this one out<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; it\u2019s available in apple, black, canary, dusty blue, white, ivory champagne and petal.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 12pt; font-family: karla;\">Moral of the story: If you have your eye on a colorful gown, wear it.
